How Many Nappies Does a Newborn Use Per Day?

If you're stocking up before your baby arrives — or you're already in the thick of those early newborn weeks — you're probably asking yourself: how many nappies do I actually need?

The honest answer might surprise you. Newborns go through a lot. We're talking 8 to 12 nappy changes a day in those first few weeks. That's one every two to three hours, around the clock.

Here's a rough guide to what most Australian parents experience:

Weeks 1–4: 8–12 nappies per day. Newborns have tiny stomachs and feed constantly, so wet and dirty nappies follow suit.

Months 1–3: 6–10 per day. Feeds become more spaced out, but you're still changing frequently.

Months 3–6: 5–8 per day. Bowel movements often reduce in frequency, especially once breastfed babies hit the 6-week mark.

6 months+: 4–6 per day. More settled, but still plenty of nappy action.

How Many Nappies Should You Stock Before Birth?

Most experienced parents recommend having at least 2–3 packs of newborn nappies on hand before your due date — but don't go overboard. Babies grow faster than you expect, and many skip newborn size altogether if they arrive on the bigger side (3.5kg+).

A sensible starter kit might look like:

2 packs of newborn (up to 5kg)

3–4 packs of Size 1 (3–6kg)

A few packs of Size 2 ready to go

Why Nappy Quality Matters More Than You Think

With that many changes per day, a poor-quality nappy isn't just inconvenient — it causes problems. Traditional nappies use wood pulp fluff to absorb moisture. Wood pulp is bulky, can break down when saturated, and often leaves babies sitting in a damp layer right against their skin.

Crikey Bottoms nappies use a 100% SAP (Super Absorbent Polymer) core — no pulp, no bulk. SAP is the same material used in hospital-grade wound dressings. It locks moisture away fast and keeps it there, so your newborn's skin stays dry between changes. Less nappy rash, fewer leaks, and a more comfortable baby.

It makes a real difference when you're doing 10 changes a day.

Tips for Managing the Nappy Load

Keep a change station on every level of your home. Running upstairs 10 times a day gets old fast.

Use overnight nappies after dark. They're designed for longer wear and help everyone get more sleep.

Subscribe and save. If you find a nappy your baby loves, set up a regular delivery so you're never caught short at 2am.

Don't panic if you go through more than expected. Every baby is different, and growth spurts can mean a few extra changes daily.

Newborn life is full of surprises — nappy usage included. The good news is once you've got your rhythm down, it becomes second nature. And choosing the right nappy from the start means fewer leaks and less mess to deal with along the way.

Crikey Bottoms is an Australian family-owned nappy brand based in Brisbane. Our pulp-free formula is designed for Aussie babies and available in sizes from newborn through to toddler.
